Review BMW Cylinder Head Camshaft Oem fits M30 E3 E9 1968–1974

The **BMW 11121250017 cylinder head camshaft** is a meticulously engineered component designed exclusively for the legendary **E3/E9 3.0CS and 2800CS models** produced between **1968 and 1974**, marking a pivotal era in BMW s evolution from classic elegance to high-performance engineering. This part belongs to the **M30 six-cylinder inline engine**, a powerhouse renowned for its smooth, torque-rich operation and timeless reliability. The camshaft in question is a critical element of the overhead valve (OHV) design, featuring precision-machined lobes that govern the timing and lift of the intake and exhaust valves, directly influencing throttle response, engine breathing, and overall performance. Crafted from high-grade steel, it is built to withstand the demands of high-revving applications while maintaining durability under the demanding conditions of classic BMW driving whether cruising along scenic European roads or pushing through spirited acceleration. The **11121250017** designation ensures compatibility with the **3.0CS s** (2970 cc) and **2800CS s** (2788 cc) variants, both of which were celebrated for their luxurious interiors, handcrafted wood trim, and the distinctive growl of their twin-SU carbureted or later Weber-injected configurations. This camshaft is not merely a functional part but a piece of automotive heritage, embodying the engineering precision that defined BMW s golden age of mechanical artistry. For enthusiasts seeking to restore or enhance their E3/E9, this component is indispensable, offering a seamless fit that preserves the engine s original character while ensuring optimal performance and longevity. Whether installed in a meticulously restored showpiece or a daily-driven classic, the **11121250017 camshaft** remains a cornerstone of the M30 s legendary reputation.

### **Pros and Cons of Buying a 1968 1974 BMW M30 (E3/E9) 3.0CS/2800CS with Cylinder Head and Camshaft Upgrades (VIN: 11121250017)**

#### **Pros**

1. **Classic BMW Engineering**

- The M30 engine is one of BMW s most iconic straight-six designs, known for its smooth power delivery, durability, and timeless appeal. The 3.0L version (introduced in 1968) was a significant upgrade over earlier models, offering better performance and refinement.

2. **Strong Performance Potential**

- With the right modifications (such as upgraded cylinder heads and camshafts), this engine can produce **150 200 horsepower** in stock form, depending on tuning and maintenance. The 3.0CS (2800CS) was already a high-performance variant, making it a great base for further upgrades.

- The M30 s naturally aspirated design allows for relatively straightforward modifications, including forced induction (turbo/supercharger) in later years.

3. **Proven Durability (With Proper Care)**

- When maintained correctly, the M30 can last **200,000 miles** or more. Key to longevity is **regular valve adjustments, proper lubrication, and avoiding excessive heat buildup** (common in older BMWs).

- The **cylinder head and camshaft upgrades** (assuming they are high-quality aftermarket parts) can improve efficiency, reduce wear, and enhance performance.

4. **Classic BMW Driving Experience**

- The E3/E9 chassis offers a **lightweight, nimble handling** experience typical of BMWs from this era. The manual transmission (if present) provides engaging driving dynamics.

- The **2800CS** was a luxury grand tourer, combining comfort with sportiness ideal for enthusiasts who appreciate both style and performance.

5. **Restoration and Customization Opportunities**

- BMWs from this era are highly customizable, from **restomod builds** to full restorations. The M30 s simplicity compared to later BMW engines makes it a favorite for DIY mechanics.

- Aftermarket support is strong, with **performance parts, restoration kits, and tuning solutions** widely available.

6. **Investment Potential**

- Well-maintained examples of the **3.0CS/2800CS** (especially in showroom condition) can appreciate in value, particularly if they are **original, low-mileage, or with classic BMW appeal**.

- The **E3/E9 series** is a sought-after collector s item, especially in Europe and among BMW purists.

7. **Lower Running Costs (Compared to Modern Cars)**

- Fuel efficiency is modest ( 12 15 MPG), but parts and labor are **far cheaper** than modern BMWs. Insurance and maintenance costs are also lower than for contemporary luxury cars.

---

#### **Cons**

1. **High Maintenance Requirements**

- The M30 is **not a "set it and forget it" engine**. Key maintenance tasks include:

- **Regular valve adjustments** (every 10,000 15,000 miles to prevent knocking).

- **Timing belt replacement** (critical failure can destroy the engine).

- **Rod bearing checks** (common failure point in older M30s).

- **Cooling system upkeep** (BMWs from this era are prone to overheating if neglected).

- If these are ignored, **engine failure can occur suddenly and expensively**.

2. **Potential for Hidden Issues**

- **Water pump failures** (common in M30s) can lead to overheating and head gasket leaks.

- **Distributor and ignition system wear** (if not upgraded) can cause misfires.

- **Transmission issues** (if automatic) can be costly to repair.

- **Rust** (especially in older E3/E9 chassis) may require frame repairs.

3. **Fuel and Emissions Challenges**

- The M30 runs best on **high-octane fuel (91 octane)**. Poor-quality fuel can cause **detonation and engine damage**.

- **Modern emissions regulations** may require modifications (catalytic converters, OBD-II compliance) if the car is to be driven legally in some regions.

4. **Limited Modern Comforts**

- **Basic interior** (no power steering, basic climate control, or modern safety features).

- **Poor fuel economy** compared to modern cars.

- **No modern electronics** (no Bluetooth, USB, or advanced driver aids).

5. **Parts Availability and Cost**

- While parts exist, **some components (especially for the E3/E9 chassis) can be expensive or hard to find**.

- **Replacement engines** (if needed) can cost **$5,000 $15,000 **, depending on condition.

6. **Driving Limitations**

- **No modern safety features** (no ABS, airbags, or stability control).

- **Poor night visibility** (smaller headlights, no modern lighting tech).

- **Less refined ride** compared to modern BMWs (stiffer suspension, more road noise).

7. **Insurance and Legal Restrictions**

- **Classic car insurance** is often required (and can be expensive if the car is high-value).

- Some **modern emissions zones** may restrict or ban older cars unless modified.

---

### **Ending Conclusion**

Buying a **1968 1974 BMW 3.0CS/2800CS (M30 engine, E3/E9 chassis) with upgraded cylinder heads and camshafts** is a **fantastic choice for an enthusiast** who:

- **Appreciates classic BMW engineering** and is willing to invest time in maintenance.

- **Enjoys driving a well-tuned, naturally aspirated engine** with strong performance potential.

- **Sees value in restoration projects** and customization.

- **Does not mind lower fuel efficiency and modern comfort trade-offs** for the driving experience.

However, it is **not the right choice for someone** who:

- **Wants a hassle-free, low-maintenance car**.

- **Prioritizes modern safety, fuel economy, or technology**.

- **Cannot commit to regular mechanical upkeep** (valve adjustments, cooling system checks, etc.).

- **Is concerned about long-term reliability without significant investment**.

### **Recommendation**

If you are **passionate about BMWs and willing to put in the work**, this **3.0CS/2800CS with M30 upgrades** is an **excellent investment** both as a **daily driver (with realistic expectations)** and as a **restoration project**. Focus on:

**Thorough pre-purchase inspection** (check for rust, engine condition, transmission, and electrical systems).

**Immediate upgrades** (timing belt, water pump, ignition system, cooling system).

**Regular maintenance** (valve adjustments, oil changes, fuel system cleaning).

**Documentation** (service records, original parts, restoration photos).

For the right buyer, this car offers **unmatched driving pleasure, collectible value, and a rewarding ownership experience**. For others, the **maintenance demands and limitations** may outweigh the benefits.

**Final Verdict:** *Buy if you re prepared for the commitment; otherwise, consider a more modern BMW or a different classic with lower upkeep.*
